The Big Spring Clean
Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG), in association with Rochdale Town Centre Management, Rochdale Council Environmental Management and Wardle Society volunteers, set about sprucing up the town centre and the surrounding streets. The weather was on our side as we split into two groups, taking the north and south of the central area up to a radius of half a mile. Some REAG members tackled a patch of wasteland on the main road into the town centre which is a regular collection point for litter, and there was plenty of it available! A nearby workman volunteered his opinion that "you'll never clear all that"; fourteen bags later, he was happy to admit he'd been wrong! While this was going on, some of the operatives from Town Centre Management were applying fresh paint to a couple of alleyways which helped to brighten up the area, which Environmental Management co-ordinated the collection of all the litter bags from various pick-up point. In all, forty bags of litter were removed from the streets of Rochdale on Saturday morning; a great team effort from all concerned. This was the first time that these groups and agencies have worked together on a project, an the impetus is there for us all to do it again soon.
