Heighington Parish Litter Group was set up in February 2005, following a  Parish  Plan survey in 2004 which showed that over 90% of the people in the parish had concerns about litter.    Volunteers from the parish and friends carry out regular clean up litter picks, mainly collecting litter from the verges and hedges of the roads between and beyond the villages in the parish, and not in the villages themselves.

The group seeks to draw attention to the litter problem and also to other local environmental issues.  Each year it awards the McLean Cup to the person in the parish who is judged to have made the most significant contribution to improving the environment or reducing litter.  The group also keeps in contact with the only school in the parish and has presented two shields which students compete for annually in a relevant competition set by the school. In 2006 the group ran an open competition for the best limerick on the subject of litter and this attracted over 200 entries from a wide area.
In 2008 the group took part in the launch of the CPRE Stop the Drop campaign in County Durham.
